2025 Review and 2026 Outlook: a two-minute teaching overview
Transcript
Read the report correctly
This is a United Capital research report: its 2026 numbers are forecasts, not results. Read it as one analyst view built on public information, not a guarantee.
Global and regional transmission
Global shocks travel through rates, oil and currencies: the report says higher US rates tighten global liquidity, while lower 2026 oil prices could hurt oil exporters' revenues and currencies. The report finds growth opportunities in Sub-Saharan Africa and WAEMU, alongside risks. WAEMU debt and costly regional financing show why growth and risk coexist.
Nigeria: output and oil exposure
Nigeria's output is mostly non-oil: the report puts non-oil at 96.56% of Q3 2025 GDP and oil at 3.44%. Government revenue and foreign-exchange inflows still lean on oil. A fall in oil prices can therefore pressure public finances and foreign-exchange supply.
Budget and sector reforms
The report says the proposed 2026 budget spends N58.18 trillion against N34.33 trillion revenue; subtracting gives a N23.85 trillion deficit. Bank recapitalisation, insurance reform and capital gains tax rules are expected to build resilience, solvency and long-term investing.
Markets and forecast assumptions
The NGX-ASI gained 51.19% in 2025. Index price appreciation differs from bond yields, which the report says fell. For 2026 the report forecasts about 31% ASI gain, assuming reforms continue, and slightly lower yields.
Allocation and reading framework
The report's one-year model portfolio shows weights totalling 100% and a 26.1% expected return. Information only: the report says it is not an offer to buy or sell.
What this course teaches
Treat 2026 numbers as research forecasts, not outcomes. Growth outlooks sit beside transmission channels and debt risks. Output share and revenue dependence are different measures. The budget gap is spending minus revenue; reform benefits are expectations. Equity gains and yields are different; 2026 values are report forecasts. The model is the report's illustration, not an offer.
